- Bought this for a family backpacking trip and love it. I didn’t keep track, but likely filtered 30-40 liters for our 3 day trip, and it showed no signs of slowing down. I only have one 3 day trip with this filter, but so far it’s easily the best filter I’ve had. I’ve used hand pump filters, chemical treatment, boiling water, other gravity filters, and this is by far the best. It filters fast even with just gravity. If needed the extra squeeze speeds things up (something my last gravity filter would not allow). Most of the time we just hung up my filter bag walked away and came back when it was done. When I got home I back flushed (also something my last gravity filter did not allow) and bleached per the instructions. It was easy and clearly had some affect as the backwash water was quite dirty. With respect to the filter I really have nothing bad to say about it. For $40 it’s a great deal even without the accessories. If I had to be not picky, the only thing I could see making some improvement is some of the accessories. I didn’t have any issues with the bags, but others have reported issues, and I’ve had issues with similar style flasks in the past. I ended up using a 3 liter flask from my previous Katadyne befree and let gravity filter water straight into my 3 liter MSR hydration bladder. This worked great! The fittings that came with it worked just ok. I like to have more hose, so again I stole some from one of my previous filters. I would have gotten by just fine with what was provided, but to get hands off filtering from one pouch to the next, I modified the setup a bit. Last, is a problem I have thats not unique to this filter. Trying to fill a pouch from questionable stagnant water is challenging, the water usually needs some kind of prefiltering (bandana), and needs to be scooped out. The is one of the few scenarios where a hand pump filter with a prefilter on the inlet hose wins out. Overall this is my favorite filter and expect it will be my primary filter from now on. If anything change my opinion I’ll come back and update my review.

Many mention that while the tablets don’t remove sediment, they effectively disinfect water, which is what matters most in the wild. People also like having them as a reliable backup in emergency kits or when traveling to places with uncertain water quality.
- They are the tiniest tablets. There is cotton packing the top, which seemingly could be used as steril ER first aid. I wonder how many uses they could have in first aid, but bottle says only to use as directed. For the size, and the purpose, it makes great EDC gear. Dehydration is your second greatest enemy next to hypothermia.
– Kevin
- These area great tablets to use for emergency use. Always start with the cleanest water you can of course – like running water, not still water. It’s not going to clean bits of dirt and stuff from the water – it just kills the little baddies that can make you sick, You drink a bit of dirt you’ll live. But just get some fast moving water, preferably like off a small waterfall, and you’ll love it.

- These filters are a great choice for anyone looking for a simple, reliable solution for clean drinking water. They hold up well, even after repeated use, and the price point is definitely better compared to other similar filter straws on the market. I’ve compared them side-by-side with more expensive brands, and these perform just as well, if not better in some cases. The 5-stage filtration system is a nice feature, removing 99.99999% of harmful substances while still maintaining the water’s mineral balance. The smaller 0.1-micron pore size ensures high filtration accuracy while keeping the flow rate fast enough for practical use. The compact size makes it easy to carry in your pocket, bag, or backpack, so it’s perfect for camping, hiking, or emergency preparedness. Overall, this is a great filter for the price, offering durability, efficiency, and convenience. Definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a portable and affordable water filter.

- So after camping in Pisgah National Forest for 3 weeks these were invaluable. They are super lightweight and durable. They functioned perfectly and are a great design. We tested muddy puddle water strained through these against city purified water and these won. Also very easy to clean.

- I took this on a 3.5 day hike and was amazed at how much faster it filtered water compared to my old Sawyer Squeeze. The first time I tried it, water barely came out, but after reading the cleaning instructions and giving it a shake, it worked like a charm with a jet-powered flow. The collapsible bottle is easy to pack, though it can be floppy when full, so I mostly used it to filter into other bottles. My hiking buddy was so impressed they bought one right away. It made filtering water almost fun and saved a lot of time on the trail.
– Alex Theis
- I ditched my Sawyer for the BeFree on a section hike of the Appalachian Trail and couldn’t be happier. The large opening makes filling super easy, even from shallow water. The flow rate is impressive — I could filter 2 liters and be ready for a third before others finished their first. Drinking directly from it is comfortable since the collapsible flask avoids pressure issues you get with rigid bottles. It’s lightweight, fast, and perfect for solo or multi-day trips. Definitely my go-to filter now.

Overall, it’s a solid choice if you want a hands-off, dependable filter for outdoor adventures.
- Used this for the first time in the Boundary Waters NE of Ely, MN where store-bought fresh drinking water is hours away. Wilderness. This system functioned flawlessly. Although the water in those lakes is some of the cleanest in the US, we filtered 4 days worth through this filter. Odorless, colorless, and tasteless. This system works absolutely flawless. Don’t look anywhere else. This is what you want. (Can see it hanging from the tree in the left of the picture). Probably ran 10 bags of a gallon and a half each through it. It’s almost weightless to carry, water quality is 100%, and it’s about as easy to use as they get. Zero flaws.
– Chef Nasty
- This water filter was awesome easy and light weight to carry on a week long trip with my daughter on Isle Royale. There are only a cpl places on the island to get drinking water off tap, you must have filters to get drinking water when back country. Packed easily into my bag, and allowed us to carry 2, 24 oz “Smart Water” sport bottles ea. Didn’t even touch our Sawyer Mini filters we’d taken as back up. Bag opening is easy to fill and close. Only issue, when bag is rolled closed it was not totally leak proof. Awareness to watch for drips into clean water. The bag/filter when hung, provided full 20 oz bottles in short time, maybe two mins to fill our bottles. Cleaned each day as directed. Remember the bag provided for cleaning! We had no issues at all. Took a little bit of space as it’s a rubber bag with long tube with a filter that is for sure longer than a Sawyer filter. Function and provided fast, clean water with ease. beat any space/weight concerns I had initially. Clean, clear water that had no taste issues at all. Pulled water from Lk. Superior and multiple inland lakes. Never an issue and flavor never a problem. Seemed clearer then the tap from Rock Harbor. Awesome product, for sure recommend. Filters are rather large, note the specs given from manufacture. Just be aware of space it does take up. We had no issues even with carrying Swayer minis as back ups. We never used them. 5 nights, 45 miles wandered. Thanks for keeping us with healthy, clean water.

- We had a 7-person backpacking group go on a 2-night, 10-mile trek in Arkansas. Day 1 didn’t have any water sources until we finished 6 miles. This pump worked great to refill all our bottles (6+ liters). It went pretty quick and we didn’t have any issues operating it. The water tasted clean and didn’t have any aftertaste. It specifies 0.01 micron filtering which gave us extra peace of mind. It’s easy to use but works best with two people — one to hold the hose and one to pump. Overall, a great filter for groups.

If you want a reliable, fast way to stay hydrated on your outdoor adventures, this bottle is worth considering.
What People Say
Users love how quick and straightforward it is to get clean water, especially when traveling with kids or in places where water quality is questionable. Many mention the taste is noticeably better than other methods and appreciate the solid build and versatility for different outdoor situations.
- If you have young kids, this is your answer. I needed an easy purification system to use while hiking with my kids, and I needed something that would produce water “normal” enough for a young kid to drink abundantly. The Grayl was a home run. This filter works great, but it is especially perfect if you are traveling with kids. I took one of my kids (8 yrs old) on a short backpacking trip this summer and this was the ideal filter. She can’t really work the slowish straw-type or pump-type filters; adding the purifying drops makes the water taste like medicine and sometimes you have to wait awhile; and the UV-light systems might kill the bugs but the water remains silty or murky. The Grayl solves all of those problems. My kid isn’t a wimp; she would have reluctantly drunk murky or bad-tasting water, but she drank a lot more water (esp. important in July) since I could refill her water bottle with clear, great-tasting water as quickly and as often as she wanted. The second time I used the Grayl (long day-hike), I was able to continuously refill the water bottles for the entire family. Again, it was super convenient and not difficult to convince the younger kids to drink the clear and clean water that came out. Maybe it’s not 100% perfect: it’s a little hard to push the inner bottle down (but not that hard). I squirt myself in the face sometimes as excess water comes out the sides as I push down, but with young kids this thing was absolutely worth its weight in gold. The water looks and tastes like fresh clear tap water, and you can refill others’ water bottles as much and as quickly as you want. Like I said (wrote) above: Home Run.
– David J. Lunt
- We bought the Grayl 24 oz GeoPress specifically because we were traveling to Africa, and we were not certain we could trust the water supplies. Probably the best way to write a review is to do a pros and cons breakdown. PROs 1) This filter really works! We encountered a wide variety of water sources, and every time the Grayl produced filtered water that smelled and tasted good. I say that because some of the water smelled a bit funky before filtration; but after using the Grayl, it smelled good. 2) The filter is easy to use. You just fill the outer vessel about 3/4 full, place the filter/inner vessel inside it, and push down. The filtered water fills the inner vessel and is immediately ready to use. 3) The filter is relatively compact. The entire system is no bigger than a large water bottle. 4) The Grayl system seems very well made. We used it almost every day while in Africa, and it worked perfectly every time. 5) It basically filters everything: bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and odors. During the entire month we were in Africa, we experienced no gastrointestinal issues due to “bad” water because we only drank filtered water from the Grayl. CONs 1) The Grayl system is fairly heavy. When you are trying to pack light, the Grayl system uses up a bit of your weight budget. There have been some reviewers that complained of water leaking around the seal between the inner and outer vessels. I believe they simply were not using the system correctly. If you take a little care and line things up as they were intended, it works perfectly every time. Also, some reviewers have complained that it takes too much effort to plunge the inner vessel when filtering. There is definitely some resistance when you are plunging (filtering), but if you are patient, it really does not take a significant effort. My wife used it frequently, and she applies a lot less force than I do. Bottom line, the Grayl filter system is an easy, convenient, and effective method for purifying water when you are traveling. I highly recommend this product and believe it is one of the best filter systems available.

When you’re out hunting or fishing, having a dependable water filter that’s easy to carry and quick to use can make all the difference. The Katadyn Hiker Pro fits right in your pack without adding much weight, and it pumps out clean water fast—about a liter a minute. It handles everything from clear mountain streams to murkier water, filtering out bacteria, protozoa, and other nasties while reducing unpleasant tastes thanks to its activated carbon core. What’s cool is that you can clean the filter right in the field without any hassle, so it keeps working smoothly trip after trip. Whether you’re on a weekend camping trip or a longer survival outing, this filter gives you peace of mind without slowing you down.
What People Say
Users love how fast and effective this filter is, especially for mountain hunting and backpacking trips. The removable filter and easy cleaning make it a favorite for groups and solo adventurers alike, though some mention it’s easier with two people when pumping.
- I use these Katadyn pumps for my scout troop because the filter is removable and easy to dry, which is great since the kids aren’t always careful after trips. It’s quick to use and fills a Nalgene bottle in just a couple of minutes. The only tricky part is pumping solo since it takes both hands, but with a buddy it’s no problem. Definitely reliable and built to last.

- If you camp or hunt in the mountains, this is worth the investment. It purifies a good amount of water quickly without wearing you out. I bought it for elk hunting in Montana and it worked like a charm. Would buy again for sure.

SEMMERFELD Personal Straw Water Filter
If you’re out hunting, fishing, or just exploring the outdoors, having a reliable way to get clean water is a game changer. This SEMMERFELD personal straw water filter is super handy because it’s lightweight and portable, so you can stash it in your pack or even your pocket. It’s designed to filter out solids, heavy metals, and other nasty stuff down to 0.5 microns, which means you’re getting water that’s much safer to drink straight from natural sources. Plus, it comes in a two-pack with an extra filter element, so you’re covered for longer trips or can share with a buddy. Whether you’re hiking, camping, or prepping for emergencies, this filter is easy to use and clean, making it a practical choice for anyone who spends time outdoors.
What People Say
People appreciate how durable and well-made these filters are, especially the easy-to-clean design and the ability to see water flowing through the clear section. The two-pack value and included accessories like lanyards make it a favorite for outdoor enthusiasts who want a reliable, no-fuss water filter.
- Just holding and looking at these personal water filter straws by Semmerfeld one can see the quality of the water filters. This review is for the two pack which also came with an extra set of internal filter elements. Love the way these straws look; almost high tech. These filter straws can be disassembled for cleaning. The PES Hollow Fiber Membrane and active carbon filter can be removed for cleaning or for replacement. These filter straws can be attached to a standard water bottle for filtering. These filters can also be used in an gravity water filtering system. Each end of the personal water filter straw ends have snug caps. These personal filter water straws seem easier to suck through than other straws I have used. These straws are a little bigger in diameter than other straws I have used but I think the bigger diameter make the straws easier to draw water through. There is a clear section in the straws so you can see the water flowing through the straw. Each straw comes with a lanyard with a carabiner clip to attach to the straw. These personal water filter straws remove solids, plastics, sand, and heavy metals down to 0.5 Microns from the water source. The internal filters will remove impurities & sediments, solid particles, odor & chlorine, tiny organisms, harmful substances, heavy metals, and organic chemicals. It is advertised that these personal water filter straws are capable of filtering 1,321 Gallons/5,000 Liters of water. These values will of course depend on the quality of water being filtered. At the time of this review, this two pack of Semmerfeld Personal Water Filters were selling for $14.99 which makes the cost of each straw $7.50. This is a great price for two high quality water filters and an extra set of internal filter elements. I have not tested these filters but based upon the quality of construction and the filtering elements included, I have faith they will filter as advertised. I do a lot of hiking and will be including one of these filters in my pack. These water filter straws really do look cool and high tech.
– Jeffh
- The bubble pack style packaging enclosed both survival straws, which were packaged separately in their own boxes. Besides the straws themselves, the kit included a spare fiber filter cartridge and cotton covered carbon pre-filter, as well as neck lanyards for each straw and an instruction sheet. The instructions were simple and straightforward, describing simple care and use with illustrations. Filter replacement is a snap. Each end just threads right out of the main tube which allows access to the interior for filter replacement in seconds. I thought that this was a very well designed feature. The whole unit seems to be constructed of robust materials, making the entire unit tough and reliable. I will definitely be keeping these in our go bags and adding them to our regular gear checklist when we go on hikes or other trips. All things considered, I think that this is a great survival tool.

When you’re out hunting or fishing, having clean water on hand is a must, and the SurviMate 5-Stage Filter Bottle makes that super easy. It’s not just a water bottle—it’s got a serious filtration system that tackles everything from chlorine and heavy metals to sediments and odors, so you can drink confidently from almost any source. The filter’s tiny 0.01-micron pores mean it catches way more than your average filter, and it’s NSF certified, which adds some peace of mind. Plus, it’s lightweight and fits nicely in your backpack or clipped to your gear, making it perfect for long days outdoors. Whether you’re on a weekend camping trip or prepping for emergencies, this bottle keeps you hydrated with clean water without the hassle of carrying extra filters or bulky gear.
What People Say
Users love how well this bottle filters out unpleasant tastes and odors, making questionable water sources drinkable. The compact size and handy clip make it easy to carry on hikes or fishing trips. Some mention the initial charcoal taste, but it fades quickly after a few sips. Overall, it’s praised for reliability and convenience in the outdoors.
- I took this bottle on a trip to Costa Rica and it was a game changer. We barely bought bottled water because the filter handled the tap water easily, even filtering out that mineral taste. It fits perfectly in a backpack side pocket and the clip is handy for attaching it to pants or gear. Heads up for first-time use: the water might look a bit dark at first because of the charcoal, but just spit out the first few sips and you’re good to go. Definitely saved us money and reduced plastic waste on the trip.
– Kindle Customer
- Used this on a trip to the Greek Isles after hearing the tap water wasn’t safe. Followed the advice to drain it a few times before drinking and the taste was great. I filled it over 30 times in 12 days and never had any issues. It’s a bit slower to sip from because of the filtration, but that’s expected. Overall, very happy with the purchase and it gave me confidence drinking water from uncertain sources.

- The Platypus QuickDraw is one of the best overall water filters I’ve tested. I use it daily to filter all my drinking water, even tap, for medical reasons. Taste-wise, it’s much better than the Katadyn BeFree. It has a slight chemical taste when dry but clears quickly after running some water through. The flow rate is solid—slower than Katadyn but noticeably better than LifeStraw or Sawyer Squeeze, which works fine for me. The design is excellent with a universal bottle adapter, secure flip top, and protective cap. It’s compact, rugged, and feels military-grade. Just make sure to tighten the threads fully to avoid leaks. Overall, it’s a filter I trust for home, travel, or outdoors.

- Used this gravity filter system during a dispersed camping/hunting trip in the national forest. It does exactly what it’s supposed to do and does it well. Filled the bag with cloudy creek water, hung it from a tree, and started filtering water for coffee. The water came out crystal clear. Very happy with this gravity system!

Uzima UZ-2 Water Filter
If you want a reliable way to get clean water whether you’re camping, hunting, or just prepping at home, the Uzima UZ-2 is a solid choice. It’s a gravity-fed system with two buckets stacked on top of each other — you pour water in the top, and gravity pulls it through a hollow fiber membrane that blocks 99.999% of bacteria and protozoa. It’s not the smallest filter out there, so it’s better suited for car camping or basecamps rather than backpacking, but it’s super easy to use and clean. Plus, it doesn’t need any power, so it’s great for off-grid situations or emergencies. Whether you’re filtering rainwater at home or fresh water out in the wild, this system gives you peace of mind with a steady flow of safe drinking water.
What People Say
People appreciate how straightforward this filter is to use and clean, especially when you need a reliable source of clean water without fuss. The steady flow rate and solid filtration make it a favorite for emergency kits and camping setups alike. Some mention it’s a bit bulky for backpacking but perfect for basecamps or home use.
- The Uzima UZ-2 Camping/Drinking water filter system filters quickly; it is incredibly easy to use….water into the top (filtering) and within 15 minutes, water flows from the spigot. Negative issue: no instructions, no information on where to order replacement parts (spigot). Three days AFTER our Uzima Filter System arrived and was in use in our rental, we received a letter from our city, stating that the water from our service line must be tested. The service line has been identified as one having “material of unknown source.” Yikes! We now use water to the house for showering/toilets/laundry. The Uzima Water Filter System, however, provides us with drinking/cooking water…happily collected from rain water. We shall continue to use our Uzima filter regardless of testing results. Will post info from water quality results when obtained.

Some note it’s a bit pricier than other options, but the quality and reliability make it worth it.
- This is a pretty simple and compact system! It’s easy enough to put the straw filter tube into a water source and use the pump to draw it through the filter into your bag or container. The pump works very similar to a basketball pump. Easy operation. The kit comes with everything you need. A tube for the filter, another straw tube for drinking on the go, a carrying case and a plastic water bottle. The water bottle can easily clip to your pack with the included carabiner and straw top. We used a local lake to test this out. We tested the water after pumping it into a cup with a water tester and it came back at less than 100p ppm which is great! My husband drank it and said the water didn’t taste too bad or gritty. That’s pretty good since we come from Florida and there’s alot of sandy grit in our lakes. These pack up small and don’t take a lot of space in our go bags. Only weighs about a pound or two. My only drawback would be the price. I’ve seen similar sets much cheaper. But the quality is good on this set and I feel it will keep its value if an emergency occurs to feel good about the water we can get.

- This product doesn’t take a lot of bag space and is light weight. I filtered water out of the creek on my property and it was clean and tasted good. Been a week and I’m still healthy and no stomach or gut issues. I’ll probably buy another for myself as I put this in my wife’s get home bag. Hopefully she won’t need it but it’s there and doesn’t add a lot of weight to her pack.

BKLES 3-in-1 Solar Electric Water Filter
If you’re someone who spends a lot of time outdoors hunting, fishing, or just exploring, having a reliable water filter that’s easy to use can make all the difference. The BKLES 3-in-1 Solar Electric Water Filter is pretty unique because it combines electric pumping, hand pumping, and solar charging all in one compact device. You just press a button, and it starts filtering water from rivers, lakes, or streams without needing much effort. Plus, if the battery runs low, you can switch to the hand pump or recharge it with the built-in solar panel. It even has an emergency LED light and can charge your phone, which is a nice bonus when you’re out in the wild. It’s lightweight and fits neatly in its case, so it won’t weigh down your pack. Whether you’re on a weekend trip or prepping for emergencies, this filter feels like a smart, practical companion for clean water on the go.
What People Say
People really like how this filter combines tech and practicality. The electric pump makes getting water effortless, but the hand pump backup is a lifesaver when power runs out. The solar charging is a neat feature that adds convenience, especially on longer trips. Many users mention the filter’s compact size and how it fits well in their gear without adding bulk. The emergency light and phone charging options are often highlighted as unexpected but useful extras.
- Charged up and used. Great 6 filter electric system. Compact and works well. I charged it by plugging it in to my high speed charger. I haven’t used the solar panel charger yet. The tubes do need to be laid out so there is no kink in the tubes. When doing this outdoors this is easy. Indoors when trying to use it without making a mess is a different story. I have found as I got older, I seemed to get a mild version of Montezuma’s revenge when I travel outside of the area I live. Being a scientist I hypothesized that this might be due to a local bacterial/viral load in the water. Since I started using filters to treat water while traveling, I have had no issues with this. If you have any type of arm pain, an electronic filter like this is ideal. It works great fits in it’s carry box with enough space for an extra pre-filter. It even comes with a small carabiner clip to attach to a strap, if you are hiking or going out on a trip. Also, given the issues with forever chemicals in todays world, this does have an Activated Carbon Filter section which does remove some of these chemicals. It is easy to use and the input and output ports are protected that helps to keep them from getting contaminated.
– Robin P.
- Just did an overnight backpacking trip with my family and this was the favorite item we brought. At first I was a little worried by the size/weight, however it proved its value. The solar panel is sensitive and keeps everything working great. We used it to purify river water. It was efficient and the water was better tasting than from other filters I use. When the power ran out, the hand pump continued to run smooth. It was also invaluable for keeping our devices charged (I purchased a much shorter charging cord to minimize weight and bulk). We didn’t need the light as we are at more than 18 hours of daylight here in Alaska, but it’s still a great feature.

Lormandy Personal Water Filter Straw
When you’re out hunting, fishing, or just enjoying the outdoors, having a reliable way to get clean water is a game changer. The Lormandy Personal Water Filter Straw is super lightweight and portable, so it won’t weigh down your pack. You can drink straight from streams, lakes, or even use it with your water bottle. It filters out 99.9999% of harmful substances, which means you don’t have to worry about giardia or other nasties. Plus, it’s easy to clean with the included syringe, so it stays effective trip after trip. Whether you’re prepping for emergencies or just want peace of mind on your next adventure, this little filter is a solid, no-fuss option.
What People Say
Users appreciate how easy it is to drink straight from streams or lakes without worrying about contaminants. The lightweight design means it’s always ready to go, and the cleaning syringe is a thoughtful touch that keeps the filter working well over time. Many mention feeling safer on hikes and trips knowing they have quick access to clean water.
- Drink the water you’d be afraid to drink…if you didn’t have a way to purify it. That’s a good trick…to be able to purify water…to have something with you that might make it possible to survive comfortably out in an area without water that was potable without cleaning it up first. Whew…that was an awkward sentence…but…you know what I mean. This is a great device…well constructed…that is a personal water filter that is great to have along with you on a hike. I’ve always boiled or used chemical purification…giardia is a real drag…and you can get giardia from untreated water if you aren’t careful…so having an option that’s more immediate than the other methods is great. Good device…that the manufacture did a good job making. I’m glad I have this now.

- You know what they say. You can last weeks without food but only about three days without water! The Lormandy Store personal water filter takes care of the problem of not having safe water to drink in an emergency or while hiking and camping. This water filter straw has the ability to filter out 99.9999% of harmful substances and is rated to filter 320 gallons of water. This water filter is great for hiking and camping but especially in case of emergencies where the local water source may be contaminated. Everyone in your home should have one of these on hand.

Platypus GravityWorks 6-Liter Water Filter
If you’re heading out with a group or just want a hassle-free way to get clean water while camping or on a fishing trip, the Platypus GravityWorks is a solid choice. It’s a gravity-fed system, so no pumping required — just fill the dirty bag, hang it up, and let gravity do the work. You get up to six liters of filtered water in under four minutes, which is great when you’re cooking or need to wash up. It’s lightweight and compact enough to toss in your pack, but still handles enough water for a small group. Plus, the updated storage bag uses an eco-friendly coating, so it’s better for the environment. Whether you’re out for a weekend or prepping for longer adventures, this filter makes clean water easy and reliable.
What People Say
People love how this filter takes the effort out of getting clean water. It’s especially praised for group trips where pumping can get tedious. The quick backflush feature keeps it running smoothly, and the large capacity means fewer trips to the water source. Some mention the dirty bag’s seal could be better, but it’s a small trade-off for the weight savings.
- I took this on a 3-night backpack trip with six people and we filtered 30 to 40 liters without much hassle. The filter slowed down near the end, but a proper backflush brought it back to life quickly. No more pumping and waiting around — just fill the bag, hang it, and let it do its thing. It made carrying water way easier since we only needed small bottles for day use and refilled when needed. Definitely changed how I think about water on the trail.
– glos
- This system is a game changer for basecamp setups. I added quick-connect adapters to turn it into a spigot and hydration bag refilling station, which worked perfectly for longer treks. Just be mindful about where you use it — it’s best with reasonably clean water sources to avoid clogging. Backflushing is key to keeping it flowing smoothly, and once you get the routine down, it’s super easy. The only minor gripe is the dirty bag doesn’t have a zip seal, so you have to be careful about leaks, but overall it’s a fantastic system.

MSR Guardian Water Purifier
When you’re out hunting or fishing, clean water isn’t just a convenience—it’s a must. The MSR Guardian Water Purifier is built to handle pretty much any water source you come across, from backcountry streams to lakes and ponds. It’s military-grade, so it removes viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and particles, giving you peace of mind no matter where you are. What’s cool is that it pumps water fast—about 2.5 liters per minute—and it self-cleans with every stroke, so you don’t have to fuss with backflushing or scrubbing filters. It’s a bit on the heavier side compared to ultralight filters, but if you want reliability and speed, it’s worth the trade-off. Plus, it comes with a handy storage bag to keep everything together. Whether you’re prepping for emergencies or just want a solid purifier for your outdoor trips, this one’s a dependable companion.
What People Say
Users love how fast and reliable this purifier is, especially in tough conditions. The self-cleaning feature keeps things running smoothly without extra effort. While it’s heavier than some filters, most agree the performance and peace of mind make it worth carrying. A few mention the pump handle clip could be a weak point, but it’s easy to replace.
- This MSR Guardian isn’t the smallest or lightest, but it does exactly what it’s supposed to do. Pumping clean water into a bottle is quick, especially if your bottle has a wide mouth that screws on. It doesn’t need a deep water source, which is great, and the self-backflushing keeps it clean without extra hassle. It’s pricey, but the water tastes great and you get real peace of mind. Sure, it’s heavier for backpacking, but for me, that’s a fair trade-off.
– Todd M.
- I’ve used the Guardian on multiple trips and it’s impressive how fast it pumps compared to my old Miniworks. Even in freezing temps, it worked better than expected—I just kept it warm between layers and it didn’t freeze up. The prefilter handled mucky water well and was easy to clean by pumping water through it. The pump handle’s plastic clip might wear out eventually, but it’s an easy fix. Overall, it’s well-built, fast, and easy to maintain. Definitely worth the investment if you want reliable clean water.

It’s a reliable, no-fuss option to keep clean water within reach when you’re off the grid.
- This is a personal water purifier with a straw. It is portable, this is a mini water filtration system. It is perfect to have in your emergency and survival kit for outdoor activities, hiking, camping, traveling, and hurricanes or some kind of atmospheric disasters. It is perfect because it has a medical grade ultrafilter, BPA free. It also comes with internal compound filters, a water bag, and a silicone tube. It is triple filtration, which eliminates all visible solid sediment, reduces 99.99999% of harmful substances, and improves odor, ensuring the safest water in the worst environments. The best thing is that it is portable, practical, compact, and lightweight, which can easily fit in your purse or pocket. I recommend this purifier; it cannot be missing from your emergency bag.
– Monica Laboy
- We got this portable water filter mainly for emergency use. It comes with everything you need: a filter, a bag, a straw, a syringe and clear instructions on how to use it. We were advised to keep bottled water around the house in case of an earthquake, it’s hard to keep those supplies refreshed regularly. Having this filtration system gives me peace of mind knowing I have a solid backup if clean water ever becomes hard to access. I haven’t had to use it yet (thankfully), but it’s a great addition to my emergency kit. I’ll update my review if I get a chance to test it out in the future. So far, I’m very happy to have it on hand!

FAQ
What Should You Consider When Choosing a Water Filter for Hunting and Fishing Trips?
When selecting a water filter for your outdoor adventures, you want to balance weight, filtration capability, and ease of use. If you’re hiking long distances or carrying gear, lightweight options like the Sawyer Squeeze ($45.99) or Katadyn BeFree ($39.95) are excellent because they pack small and filter quickly. Consider the type of water sources you’ll encounter—if you expect murky or stagnant water, a pump filter like the Survivor Filter PRO ($55.96) or a gravity-fed system such as the Platypus GravityWorks ($149.95) might be better for handling larger volumes and heavier sediment. Also, think about maintenance: some filters require backflushing to keep them working well, so look for ones that come with cleaning tools or have easy maintenance routines. Lastly, check the filter’s micron rating; 0.1 micron filters remove bacteria and protozoa, which is essential for safe drinking water in the wild.
How Do You Properly Use and Maintain a Portable Water Filter in the Field?
To get the most out of your water filter, start by sourcing the cleanest water possible—fast-moving streams or clear lakes are ideal. Avoid stagnant or heavily contaminated water unless your filter is designed for it. When filling squeeze bags or reservoirs, use a bandana or pre-filter if available to reduce debris. After filtering, always backflush your filter regularly using the syringe or cleaning tools provided; this prevents clogging and extends filter life. For example, the Sawyer Squeeze includes a syringe for backflushing, and many users find adding a coupling adapter improves cleaning pressure. Store your filter dry when not in use to avoid mold or damage. If you’re using chemical tablets like Potable Aqua ($12.99), follow the instructions carefully and allow the full treatment time before drinking. Remember, no filter is foolproof against viruses unless specified, so combining methods or choosing purifiers like the GRAYL GeoPress ($99.95) can offer extra protection.
Are Water Purification Tablets a Good Alternative to Filters for Hunters and Fishermen?
Water purification tablets can be a great lightweight backup or supplement to filters, especially when you want to save space or weight. Tablets like Potable Aqua ($12.99) are easy to carry and effective against bacteria and Giardia, but they don’t remove sediment or improve taste much. You’ll need to start with the clearest water possible and wait about 35 to 40 minutes for the treatment to work. Tablets are also handy for emergencies or international travel where you might not have access to a filter. However, if you’re filtering large amounts of water regularly, a physical filter system will be faster and more convenient. Many experienced outdoorspeople carry both: a filter for daily use and tablets as a backup or for extra disinfection.
Wrapping Up
Choosing the right water filter can significantly improve your hunting or fishing trips by providing safe, clean water wherever you go. The Sawyer Squeeze Water Filtration System stands out as the best overall for its balance of performance, durability, and value. If you want a lightweight and portable option, the Membrane Solutions Straw Filter is a great pick. For quick and easy filtration, the Katadyn BeFree offers fast flow and convenience. And if you prefer a hands-off approach, gravity filtration systems like the one from Practical Survival make filtering effortless. Finally, purification tablets like Potable Aqua are a compact and affordable backup to keep in your kit. With any of these options, you’ll be better prepared to stay hydrated and healthy on your outdoor adventures.
